Placement

Hello! Now the course is done...I was graded with 7 points out of 12 after the individual exam...not bad :)
I have been in the hospital for a week now. My first day was on the 16th of April. I am in a geriatric ward with patients who have had a stroke. The first few days were a bit strange because nurses who I was with did not speak english that well, so most of the time I just was looking what they were doing. But at the end of the week I was with a nurse who spoke english very well and she let me do a lot of things...it was nice. Is it different than in Estonia? Yes, it is. First, nurses in Denmark don´t take blood, a special person from lab is doing it...strange. Also nurses are the ones who tell the doctors about the patients and which one should be visited by them. Because doctors don´t visit patients every day. And of course everything is in danish, so a lot of information gets lost and it is difficult to communicate with patients...but I only have two more weeks to go...then my time in Denmark is over.

About Denmark

Denmark is a very beautiful country. Landscape is quite the same as in Estonia, but it is very windy here. Danes are very friendly, nice and speak english very well. I think I have not met a dane who can not speak english. Even people 50+ speak english. Very nice :)
We (our course group) have visited Trelleborg, Rosklide and Copenhagen. Trelleborg is a viking fortress just few km from Slagelse. Roskilde is a very nice. I like those houses in Denmark. They are so cute with their colours and architecture. Copenhagen is very beautiful. During our visits to Copenhagen we have seen the Little Mermaid, Rundetaarn (the Round Tower) a viewing platform where you can overlook Copenhagen, the City Hall, Tivoli Garden, the Opera House, Black Diamond, the Royal House and Christiania know as a freetown. Copenhagen has a nice and long shopping street with good shops and lovely cafes.

Hello, hello...

I started my journey on the 4th of February 2012 from Helsinki. Flight to Copenhagen was nice and fast, only 1 hour and 40 minutes. My final destination was Slagelse which is about 100 km from Copenhagen and it takes 1 hour and 14 minutes with a train. Slagelse is a small town with a bit over 30,000 people on the island of Zealand.

I am taking part of a course named „Interdisciplinary health care provision“. We have students from Denmark, Belgium, France and Finland. In the end of April I have three week long placement in Slagelse hospital which is 5 minutes walk from the school...not bad. I am doing my placement in a geriatric ward. Looking forward to it...

The school and dorm are in the same house, so you don’t have to go outside and wake up early to go to school. It is very nice. I have my own room with private bathroom. We share the kitchen and living room with 12 girls. Is has been very nice so far. They are very friendly and helpful.

So, what have done so far? We have had many lessons with different teachers. We have talked about ethics and values, organization of health care, health professionals and intercultural competences, different models for health care strategies, health as a concept, health communication, joint working and interdisciplinary cooperation, different professional competences around a joint concern, making people change and research in health professions. At the end of the course we had to present a project. Our project was “Anorexia nervosa in an interdisciplinary point of view“ which we finished on the 28th of March. Now we have two weeks to prepare for the presentation and exam. We have to make a presentation of our project and then we have individual exam where we defend our project individually. After that we get our grade. No one has failed this course, so lets hope this is not going to be first time they have to fail someone :)

We also have had many study trips to different places. The first was Slagelse hospital where we were showed around. Second place was in Ubberup where they have private clinic/place for overweight people. It was really nice. They try to make people change by motivating them not just by commanding. I liked that they want their clients to feel like home. It actually looked like a place you could call home for few months. After Ubberup we visited Slagelse healt care centre. The last study trip was to Copenhagen where we visited a healt care centre. Those study trips were very nice. We always received a warm welcome...nice :)

Best wishes, Maarja, final year nurse student
